inspire me Monday : apartment painting madness!

Monday, May 20th, 2013

 Hello! Good Monday!

It has been a marathon around the Kent home as of late. The kind of life chaos filled week that creates a manic giggle effect. Do you know what I mean….It makes you good ever so slightly coo coo for a while. We have been creating and preparing for our apartment to be photographed tomorrow. It’s so fun, and it’s been a challenge because we have like zero budget. But that’s the kind of fun, creative challenge that I enjoy! We were preparing to paint most of our main living space yesterday morning when a water main to our water heater busted. BUSTED. Within ten minutes, our floors we covered in an inch of water. This threw off our schedule to say the absolute least.

But Matt and I are NOT quitters. We are determined, and maybe even a little bit stubborn. So, as soon as we got all of the water sucked up and fans set up on the carpeted areas, we got right to work! We spent all night painting and cleaning. Everyone should totally have a flooded apartment two days before it’s to be photographed….it keeps you on your toes. ;)

What our living room/kitchen looked like before the paint:

Light blue on two of four living room walls, and a very turquoise kitchen.

 Goodbye turquoise, hello coral. YES.

Matt ended up taking all the cabinet facings off while he painted. And, since I’m a weirdo, I just had to take photos of my constantly growing mis-matched dishes collection.

We are using some paint that we have had left over from when we moved in, as well as some leftover paint from friends with fantastic taste in color to keep cost down. All this painting recently has got me thinking about our bedroom and the office. I’m inspired to paint the entire apartment! Most of my descriptions on Pinterest lately have simply been “paint”…there are so many gorgeous colors out there!

I’m so happy that we are in full swing again after “The Great Flood” ( which is what Matt has decided that we shall refer to it as. haha) The painting is done aside from some touching up…..it all happens tomorrow.

Should I document the process a bit for you to see? I may not be able to share any images until the issue comes out, but is that something you guys would be interested in?

hmmm…..now what else can I paint?

inspire me monday // plant life in our home

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Today Matt and I are working on all sorts of home projects. We are painting, re-arranging furniture, and plotting out a few other building projects in preparation for the lovely Tina Sergeant to come and photograph our apartment next Tuesday for The Lakelander. I have created multiple boards on Pinterest, each filled with inspirations for our home. One of the largest trends on each board is an abundance of plant life. This will be an undertaking for Matt and I, like adopting a few plant babies. We have never tried to keep plants alive before, especially indoors. But I love the warmth and liveliness that plants bring to a room, and I just know we need a little plant love in our apartment for this shoot!

I will be giving myself a how-to-keep-my-new-plants-alive education over the weekend and will also be harvesting some local plant life that grows near our apartment on the property for the project! Wish me luck!

Any advice for an indoor plant having newbee?

keep it simple.get it done._011

new motto: keep it simple. get it done.

I work at Starbucks, as a supervisor. At any given moment I am juggling about 10 different things. Multi-task to the max. I constantly start projects during my time at work…there’s a nagging feeling that it all needs to get done at the same time, everything is on the same priority level. I feel like I carry this habit into my life most of the time, and I’m finding that while this works out well when I’m at work because there is a whole team of people at my disposal, it’s becoming a bit counter-productive in the rest of my life… I end up feeling like I never actually get anything done.

On any given day, after I get home from working the early shift at Starbucks, I may work on ten different projects. TEN! I start writing a blog post, realize that I need photos for another blog post, start a load of laundry, pack the camera gear for an upcoming P&F shoot, make social media and blog plans for  P&F…then remember : oh yea! I need to finish that blog post! …by the end of the day, I don’t really have anything accomplished. Only fragments of  progress on a zillion different projects.  Does this happen to anyone else?

I’m thinking of devoting each day to different types of projects. A day for my main focus to be blogging, a day for my main focus to be our photography business, a day to just focus on maintaining our home. Hopefully my streamlining my focus, I will get more accomplished!

keep it simple. get it done.

I’m so proud of our friends Robyn and Jarrid of The Poor Porker! They were named one of Food and Wine’s top 10 new Artisans! The Poor Porker is number three!! Are we surprised here in Lakeland? Um….no. These amazing, driven, creative people so deserve this recognition! Matt and I are also excited because one of our photos of these lovely creatives was used in the magazine! That’s right…a Penny & Finn photo has been published in the May Issue of Food and Wine magazine….icing on the cake!

P.S. One of Robyn and Jarrid’s recipes has also been published in the May issue of Glamour! We are so proud!

> if you want to keep up with all the exciting goings-on of the Poor Porker, add their blog to your reader! Along with all the exciting news, they also post delicious recipes, industrial DIYS, and the most amazing thrift finds you will ever see!

Pin for your life!

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

Mondays are typically “Inspire me Mondays”. The truth is that sometimes I am inspired by random, miss-mashed together things. From now on, when I get that criss-crossed, doesn’t make clear sense kind of inspiration, I will be sharing it on Mondays in a new feature called “Pin for your life!”. I think a lot of these pins caught my eye because we are in the process of making some changes to the apartment, and I’m also very excited to start dressing for Spring! I have to say that the first pin, the beautiful buffalo, I would LOVE to have a really big print like that in the living room!

Let the random pin show begin!
